In Jon’s canon, there are a number of entities which exist outside reality but can influence it. These entities are fears made manifest, and they feed on human fears, as well as influencing reality, primarily by causing supernatural occurrences. Some people can become bound to an entity and gain great power from it, but at the expense of much of their humanity.

Jon is The Archivist, an avatar of The Eye/The Beholding. It is the manifestation of the fear of being watched, exposed, followed, of having secrets known, but also the drive to know and understand, even if your discoveries might destroy you. It is also the fear that you’re suffering for the sake of something watching.

As The Archivist, Jon has a variety of abilities granted by his patron.

♚ QUESTIONS: Jon is able to compel people to answer his questions truthfully and to the best of their ability. Mostly it won't be noticed unless you're sensitive to that kind of thing, or know what you're looking for. If you can feel it, it apparently feels quite nice, a bit tingly.

This ability requires him to be present and physically asking the question. It cannot work over text, and if you gag him or stop him speaking, he can't ask questions.

♚ STATEMENTS: As an extension of the above, Jon can also compel people to give him a Statement. This is a story about an experience the other character has had, recalled and given with exceptional clarity and detail. This generally makes the person giving the statement a sense of relief and catharsis.

Just his presence near someone will help them to give a Statement, even if he can't speak. He is very very unlikely to try to make anyone give him a statement, but characters tend to find it much easier to tell their stories when he's around.

If a statement is given directly to him, he will then experience any nightmares that the statement-giver has about it. There is a good chance the Statement-giver will also see him in their dreams.

♚ UNWILLING STATEMENTS: In a situation of great need/desperation, Jon is able to pluck a statement directly from someone's mind and can recite it as though he is them. This is exhausting for him, and unpleasant for the person he took the statement from.

♚ KNOWING: Jon occasionally just knows information that he shouldn't be able to. These pieces of information are small and limited - in canon, he knew that two characters were working together, but couldn’t see their entire plan. He also knew exactly the dosage of an anaesthetic to give someone, and how to perform impromptu surgery on someone’s leg.

The knowledge generally will be something he is working on or focussed on. If he's speaking to someone, he might, for example, know their name before being told, but he wouldn't be able to just pick up some random stranger's name. He also isn't telepathic - he can't tell what you're thinking at any given moment.

♚ ILLUSIONS: Jon has a limited ability to see through illusions and mental manipulation. Essentially, to see the truth of things - during the Unknowing ritual, he was eventually able to see through the ritual which was warping his perceptions, and recognised the truth. He was also able to see a cursed ‘ghost’ bullet in Melanie’s leg, and the corruption is was causing, even though it was invisible to anyone else.
